What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a physiotherapy specialty that treats the muscles that line our pelvic floor and surrounding muscles that interact with it. These muscles have many functions such as: controlling bowel/bladder function, keeping pelvic organs in place, and even playing a role during sexual intercourse! We understand that this can be a difficult and unfamiliar topic to discuss. We understand the thought of surgery is scary. We understand the concerns of new moms. We understand the fear of not being able to access a washroom quickly enough.
Breathe in, breathe out, ...we can help.
Your first line of defense against Incontinence and Pelvic Pain
There is an increasing amount of literature that supports pelvic floor physiotherapy as first-line treatment for incontinence in women, even before surgical consultation. Assessment will involve hands-on evaluation of your pelvic floor muscles, muscles in your lower back, hips and sacro-iliac joints to find the areas of dysfunction and provide you with treatment strategies to address them.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy can help with:
- Incontinence (stress, urge, mixed) - incontinence is NOT a normal part of aging!
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Pelvic pain
- Pregnancy : preparation for child birth, pelvic floor/girdle pain, bladder/bowel issues
- Postpartum : diastasis recti, pelvic floor dysfunction, core muscle strengthening, pelvic girdle pain, pain during intercourse
